These tests are important to ensure that the products have no negative impact on the quality of drinking water. Only materials that meet the drinking water hygiene requirements of BS 6920 can be used for approvals (e.g. WRAS, KUKreg4, NSFreg4).

In the UK, water installations must comply with certain regulations, such as the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 in England and Wales, 2009 in Northern Ireland and 2014 in Scotland. These regulations state that water fittings and other products that come into contact with drinking water must meet certain quality standards. Reference can be made here to Regulation 4, which states that "any water fitting should be of an appropriate quality or standard", and Regulation 4(2) lists the options for demonstrating compliance, i.e. CE marking where applicable, appropriate British or European standards, and a specification approved by the regulator.
