ErP Ecolabelling - Solid fuel appliances

Solid fuel local space heating appliances (and oil and gas local space heaters) must be sold with a printed label which shows their heat output and energy efficiency index, and provide a technical fiche with the product. Electronic versions of the label and fiche must also be made available to dealers. The Energy Label Generator is now available.

The ErP regulations affect manufacturers and suppliers of solid fuel local space heating appliances, and oil and gas local space heaters.

Technical documentation should also be available to the Authorities upon request. This is a very different efficiency measurement to the one provided in the standard CE test. Boiler stoves and cookers which heat water will also need to have the heat output to water on the label. In addition to the above, any promotional information must include reference to the efficiency class.

What information is required on the Energy label?

Annex III of regulation 2015/1186 gives all the design detail for the label, but the information required to be shown is:
• Supplier's name or trade mark
• Supplier's model identifier
• The energy efficiency class (indicated by the arrow)
• The symbol for direct heat output
• The direct heat output in kW, rounded to the nearest one decimal place
• For local space heaters with heat transfer to a fluid, the symbol for indirect heat output
• For local space heaters with heat transfer to a fluid, the indirect heat output in kW, rounded to the nearest one decimal place

For more information see our Step by Step Guide to Labelling of Solid Fuel Appliances (Pt 1)

ErP Ecolabelling - Gas Fuel Local Space Heaters

What do the new regulations require?

Local space heating appliances (oil and gas) must now be sold with a printed label which shows heat output and Energy Efficiency Index (EEI), and provide a product fiche with the product. Electronic versions of the label and fiche must also be made available to dealers. Technical documentation should also be available to national audit authorities upon request. The efficiency of gas products in the regulation is calculated in a different way to the European (EN) or British Standards (BS). Any appliance (which is not a boiler space heater) that provides heat to water will also need to have the heat output to water on the label. In addition to the above, any promotional information must include reference to the Energy Efficiency Class (A-G).

For more information see our Step by Step Guide to Labelling of Gas Local Space Heaters (Pt 1)

Efficiency and emissions requirements for Solid Fuel Appliances

From 1st January 2022 the Ecodesign requirements for minimum efficiency and emissions come into force.

In addition to establishing minimum efficiency requirements, the regulations also stipulate specific eco-design requirements for emissions. The tests, designed to control the emissions limits of appliances, include:
• Particulate matter
• Organic Gaseous Compounds (OGC)
• Carbon monoxide (CO)
• Nitrogen oxides (NOx)

Which appliances are included?

All solid fuel local space heaters

What are the requirements?

  • Efficiency
  • Particulate matter
  • Organic gaseous compounds (OGC)
  • Carbon Monoxide (CO)
  • Nitrogen oxides (NOx)

Is my appliance likely to meet the emissions requirements?

Unfortunately, because these tests are not part of the CE Marking suite, appliance manufacturers tend not to know what their emissions measurements are. These emissions tests are relatively straightforward and we recommend that they are included in your future test programs. By including these tests in your standard product test program, you will get an understanding of the emissions of your appliance and whether it can be legally sold from 2022. By understanding your appliance emissions now, there is time to take corrective action where necessary to ensure that you meet emissions limits in 2022.

Requirements for product information

From the 1st January 2022, manufacturers, their authorised representatives and importers will be required to include on websites, installation and user manuals for each product the seasonal efficiency and emissions described above at nominal and possibly minimum output for every fuel specified as suitable for use. Also for the preferred fuel nominal heat output and useful efficiency shall be detailed and also indicative values given for minimum heat output. Various other technical detail may be required relating to electricity consumption, heat output/temperature controls etc.

For more information see our Step by Step Guide to Energy Labelling of Solid Fuel Appliances (Pt 2)

Efficiency and emissions requirements for Gas Appliances

From 1st January 2022 the Ecodesign requirements for maximum NOx emissions come into force and must be met.

Which appliances are included in the ErP regulations?
All gaseous fuel local space heaters (gas fires) with a nominal heat output of 50kW or less, including Inset Live Fuel Effect (ILFE) appliances, Live Fuel Effect (LFE), Decorative Fuel Effect (DFE) appliances and Independent Gas Fired Convection Heaters (freestanding stoves). The regulations include appliances installed in workshops, and decorative appliances. Some exceptions exist – for example: external appliances, sauna heaters, air heaters and products where the direct heat output is low – but the majority of gaseous fuel local space heaters, will be required to comply with the Regulations:
Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2015/1186 – energy labelling of local space heaters
