The UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UK ETS) is evolving. From January 2026, waste incineration and energy-from-waste (EfW) activities will fall under its scope.
What’s Changing?
- 2026: Voluntary Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) period begins, designed to help businesses adapt, test methodologies, and ensure accurate emissions reporting before the legal obligation begins
- 2028: Compliance becomes a legal obligation
- Applies to installations meeting the SWIP threshold (10 tonnes/day hazardous waste or 72 tonnes/day non-hazardous waste)
