What Is EMC Testing
Testing for Electromagnetic Compatibility
EMC testing verifies that your product doesn’t emit excessive interference and continues to operate correctly in the presence of interference from other systems or equipment. It’s mandatory for CE/UKCA marking and typically required for global market access (FCC/ISED, AU/NZ).
Examples of the types of products covered by our EMC testing services:
- Information Technology Equipment
- Multimedia Equipment
- Analogue & Digital Telecommunication Terminal Equipment
- Industrial Control Equipment
- Laboratory Equipment
- Gaming Machines
- Domestic Appliances
- Automotive (for aftermarket vehicle accessories)
- Medical devices
- Radio equipment
Compliance to National and International Standards:
We evaluate the requirements your electronic equipment or system must meet to comply with both national and international standards. At Kiwa we are accredited/notified bodies to ISO/IEC 17025 and ISO/IEC 17065 standards for:
- RED Europe (CE)
- FCC listed for certification in the USA
- ISED listed for Canadian certification
- VCCI Registered for Japan and MIC Certified
- Australia & New Zealand: ACMA Conformity Assessment Body
- UKCA
- Plus other global markets
Please refer to our UKAS schedule for details of specific standards for which we hold accreditation. In agreement with UKAS, we operate a Flexible Schedule of Accreditation which now makes it possible for us to add some standards directly to our UKAS schedule.
If the standard you require testing to is not currently on our UKAS schedule, please contact us so that we can assess your test requirements.

Emissions tests
Testing to establish a devices EM emissions profile to identify whether it falls within the limits required to prevent interference to other products or radio services. The testing is required for CE and UKCA marking, as well as for entry into most international markets. Tests are generally carried out to the EN 550## series of standards.
Radiated emissions
The electromagnetic interference/noise that a device radiates unintentionally.
Conducted emissions
The electromagnetic interference/noise that a device conducts through its signal and supply cables unintentionally.
Harmonic emissions
Measurement of the harmonic current (multiples of the mains supply frequency) that a device conducts through its supply cables. Tests are generally carried out to the standard EN 61000-3-2.
Flicker
Measurement of a devices effect on visible change in brightness of a lamp connected to the same mains circuit, due to rapid fluctuations in the voltage of the power supply. Tests are generally carried out to the standard EN 61000-3-3.
Immunity / Susceptibility testing
Testing to establish a device’s immunity to electromagnetic interference caused by other products, radio services and natural phenomena. The testing is required for CE and UKCA marking, as well as for entry into most international markets. Tests are generally carried out to the EN61000-4-x series of standards.
Radiated immunity
A device’s robustness to its electromagnetic environment. The testing ascertains how well a device functions when it is exposed to electromagnetic interference. Tests are generally carried out to the standard EN 61000-4-3.
Conducted immunity
The testing ascertains how well a device functions when RF voltages or currents are injected into each of the device’s cables.
Transient testing
Testing to establish a device’s robustness to very fast, high amplitude low energy pulses generally in nanosecond durations on its power and signal cables. Tests are generally carried out to the standard EN 61000-4-4.
Surge testing
Testing to establish a device’s robustness to slow, high-energy pulses generally in microsecond durations on its power and signal cables. Tests are generally carried out to the standard EN 61000-4-5.
Voltage Dips and Interruptions
Testing to assess how a device reacts in the event of a reduction of voltage (voltage dip) and when a large decrease in voltage to less than a small percentile of the nominal voltage, or a complete loss of voltage (interrupt).
ESD testing
Testing to establish a device’s robustness when touched by an electrostatically charged person. Tests are generally carried out to the standard EN 61000-4-2.
Magnetic fields
Testing to determine whether a device is immune and able to operate as intended when subjected to a magnetic field.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which EMC standards apply to my product?
It depends on function, environment and target markets. During pre‑assessment we map your product to the correct harmonised/recognised standards and confirm routes for CE/UKCA plus FCC/ISED.
Can KEC test on‑site?
Yes—our engineers can deploy on‑site emission/immunity testing with calibrated equipment for large or high‑current devices.
Do you help with design issues found during testing?
Absolutely—expect practical debug guidance, component substitutions and layout mitigations to close gaps quickly.
Can you combine EMC with Radio & Safety testing?
Yes — integrated EMC + Radio (RED) and Safety (LVD/CB) programmes compress timelines and cost, contact our team to discuss your requirements.
