This service is likely to be of interest to developers, and anyone who is building where there is a risk of ground gases entering a building.
The installation of a membrane forms a condition of planning permission, so planners, architects and specifiers will see the value of certified validation.
The Land Contamination Risk Management (EA, 2020) guidance Stage 3 process also requires verification of any remediation process.
Verification of sites also includes the identifying the suitable installation of ground gas membranes in line with the CIRIA document: Good practice on the testing and verification of protection systems for buildings against hazardous ground gases (CIRIA, C735).
This is being increasingly requested by Local Planning Authorities, even on low-risk sites, in order to show compliance with the LCRM model and to provide confidence that the installation of ground gas protection measures, identified by a BS8485 ground gas risk assessment, has been carried out to a satisfactory level.

The verification process contains a number of stages and requires several site visits in order to determine that the suitable works and installation has taken place. These include, but are not limited to:
- Site visits to determine preliminary work has been satisfactory (e.g. void formation, sub-base compaction, etc.)
- Site visits to observe membrane condition, taping, welding, placement, etc.
- Site visits to observe suitable placement of any reinforcing mesh or other tie-ins
- Site visits to observe concrete pours (usually a minimum of 50%)
What is the output?
The final report details the site visits and assesses the overall process and also the installation of the membrane and protective measures and presents all site information obtained and determines the suitability of the installation process. Assessment is carried out and presented in line with the requirements of CIRIA C7365.
