BRL K536-L ‘Multilayer plastics piping system with metal inner layer’ declared binding

Kiwa has declared the assessment guideline BRL K536-L binding as of 27 February 2026. This guideline defines the requirements for multilayer plastic piping systems with a metal inner layer for the transport of hot and cold drinking water within buildings.

Summary of the assessement guideline

The assessment guideline BRL K536-L sets requirements for pipes, fittings, and joints, focusing on:

  • Safety and reliability of the piping system
  • Hygienic suitability for drinking water
  • Performance under long term pressure and temperature conditions (up to 70 °C for 49 years, 80 °C for 1 year, 95 °C for 100 hours)

Certification includes type approval, evaluation of materials and system design, periodic inspections and assessment of the internal quality control system, ensuring continuous compliance.

Evaluation guideline changes

An evaluation guideline or ‘Beoordelingsrichtlijn’ (BRL) is a package of requirements that a product or service can meet to demonstrate a certain guarantee of quality and legality. Kiwa offers BRLs in various subject areas. The requirements in a BRL are drawn up by an independent Board of Experts. A product or service is assessed by Kiwa on the basis of those requirements. When we introduce a new BRL or when a BRL changes, we will publish these BRL's.
