In the last months experts of Kiwa Technology gave multiple presentations on a wide range of subjects regarding piping systems. Here you can find the summary of the presentations and the downloads.
September 11-12, 2018: 3rd international Polymer Testing & Analysis conference
Kiwa Technology presented “Evaluating the long-term strength of polyethylene by using the Strain Hardening Test”. The Strain Hardening test is a smart assessment of PE (pipe) materials. The test is very fast (results within 24 hours are possible), is suitable for all PE types (including PE 100-RC), requires a little amount of material (~30 grams), has a low interlaboratory scatter and has good correlations with traditional tests. The Strain Hardening Test is performed in accordance with ISO 18488 for which Kiwa Technology has ISO 17025 accreditation.

September 24-26, 2018: International Plastic Pipes Conference and Exhibition (PPXIX)
Kiwa Technology had three presentations:
The first was “Literature Review: Effect of ClO2 on Ageing of Polymer Materials and Related Test Methods” which was written together with Swerea Kimab. The lack of a fast, universally-accepted test method for chlorine-dioxide-disinfected water is hindering the development of improved plastic piping materials. A literature survey was performed to define the degradation process in which chlorine dioxide affects the ageing of polypropylene, and to describe and reflect on the different test methods stipulated by standards and developed by research institutes.

The second was “Modern PE Pipe Enables the Transport of Hydrogen”, which was written together with Groningen Seaports. To investigate the suitability of PE pipes for the transport of hydrogen on a specific industrial site, three topics were investigated. These topics are: the chemical resistance of PE to hydrogen, the permeation rate of hydrogen through PE and the electrofusion of PE pipes exposed to hydrogen. It can be concluded that the tested PE100-RC pipes on the premises of Groningen Seaport are suitable for the transport of hydrogen at pressures of up to 2 bar. However, during design and maintenance, the specific characteristics of hydrogen that distinguish it from methane need to be taken into account.

The third was “Testing Parameters Influencing the Strain Hardening Modulus”. The effect of eleven different test parameters on the strain hardening modulus was investigated using the Design of Experiments statistical method. The changes in strain hardening modulus due to temperature, tensile drawing speed and the cooling rate after annealing were assessed. The importance of taking account of proper preparation of the test setup was also demonstrated.

October 16-18, 2018: Plastic Pipes Inside Buildings
Kiwa Technology presented “Troubleshooting of old multilayer pipe systems for Hot & Cold Water”. Multilayer tubing is proven applicable for Hot & Cold Water applications. In order to improve the use of these systems and decrease the risk of future failures, we need to analyze the current failures. This presentation discusses three cases which made clear that the installation instructions of the manufacturer need to be followed, the operating conditions of the system should match the material specifications and the preservation of the entire system must be ensured.

October 24-25, 2018: International conference on Plastic Pipe Fittings & Joints
Kiwa Technology presented “Non-destructive testing of electrofusion joints. The road from laboratory to accepted practice”. In the Dutch practice for gas pipelines 5-10% of the joints (appr. 3000 annually) are taken out for visual inspection and destructive testing (ISO 13954). Since 2010 Kiwa Technology is involved in the development of Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT), with several pilots in 2018. It can be concluded that non-destructive testing of electrofusion joints is possible, but the acceptance takes time due to the differences with destructive testing, determining the proper acceptance criteria and the standardization process.
