We provide independent validation and verification of environmental declarations at both the product level (e.g., Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), Product Carbon Footprints (PCFs)) and the organizational/project level (e.g., Corporate Carbon Footprints (CCF)).

Program operation in accordance with ISO 14025

Kiwa Ecobility Experts (Kiwa EE for short) validates/verifies quantitative environmental information at:

Product level

Organizational level/project level

Environmental information can include environmental declarations (e.g., EPDs in accordance with EN 15804/ISO 21930), environmental footprints (e.g., in accordance with ISO 14067 for product carbon footprints (PCFs) and in accordance with ISO 14046 for water footprints) and declarations/ information on greenhouse gas emissions at the organizational and project level (e.g., see ISO 14064-1 /-2).

The Kiwa Group and Kiwa EE operate a validation/verification body that is geared toward the respective service areas. A structured procedure ensures compliance with the required integrity standards and the trust of the stakeholders involved, who rely on the results of the validation and verification. The process structure ensures that all environmental information is checked and confirmed in accordance with the specific requirements of the relevant standards. This creates a transparent and verifiable process that ensures an impartial and technically sound assessment.

Kiwa-EE largely complies with the requirements of ISO/IEC 17029.

As a program operator in accordance with ISO 14025, the validation/verification body follows the standardized organizational framework within the market while maintaining effective communication with the relevant stakeholders. This structure improves the traceability and reliability of the validation/verification and publication processes and ensures seamless coordination within the organization and with the requirements of ISO/IEC 17029.

What you need to know

As a programme operator for EPDs, Kiwa-Ecobility Experts (Kiwa-EE) support companies, associations or organisations in communicating quantifiable environmental information for products and services on a European harmonised, scientific basis. Through external verification and subsequent publication of the EPD in recognised databases, such as Ökobaudat, the EPDs provide decision-makers in industry, governmental and non-governmental organisations and end users with a data basis for comparing products and services with regard to their environmental impacts.

The publication of an EPD in life cycle assessment and building material databases, such as Ökobaudat, requires external verification of the environmental data. In this context, the verified and published climate and environmental indicators primarily serve business-to-business or business-to-consumer communication as a credible marketing instrument with reliable environmental statements.

Process Steps

Development of Product Category Rules (PCRs)

The program operator (Kiwa-EE), in cooperation with an advisory board (SVA), develops and publishes the foundational PCRs required for the declaration.

    Preparation of the EPD Draft

Experts from Kiwa EE request the applicable PCRs from the program operator and utilize them to formulate the initial Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) draft.

    Commissioning of a Third-party Verifier / Validator

Acting on behalf of the customer, Kiwa Ecobility Experts formally commissions the program operator to initiate the third-party verification process for the EPD draft.

Assignment of the Verifier / Validator

The program operator appoints an independent, third-party verifier to conduct the examination of the EPD.

    The Verification Process

The independent verifier evaluates the EPD data for accuracy and compliance. During this phase, the verifier consults with the Kiwa Ecobility Experts as needed and compiles a comprehensive verification report.

    The Verification Decision & Reporting

The verifier issues a decision based on a formal and substantive examination of the data.

    Publication

Contingent upon a positive external verification, the program operator (Kiwa-EE) officially publishes the verified EPD in the Ökobaudat database.

    Final Delivery

Upon successful completion of the publication process, the finalized verification report is provided directly to the customer for their records.

Programme operation of your EPD

Our standard service includes an external verification of the EPD by an independent verifier, the publication of the EPD on the homepage of the Ecobility Experts, if necessary the transfer and publication of the EPD into ÖKOBAUDAT, the EPD platform of the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community (BMI).

Framework and Governance of the Kiwa-EE EPD Program

Independent advisory board (SVA)

The independent expert committee of Ecobility Experts consists of three members. The members elected Prof. Frank Heimbecher from their ranks as chairman for a period of three years.

New members are convened by unanimous vote of the members of the SVA. Essential tasks of the SVA are

  • the monitoring of the program operation,
  • the examination and approval of PCR drafts,
  • the appointment of independent verifiers,
  • to pass on information to the programme operator on the latest findings, research results and activities in the field of sustainability in order to ensure that the programme is always up to date.

Verification

Verification is a critical check that ensures the quality and consistency of the content of an EPD. For publication, the EPD must have completed a verification. A Verification is performed by a verifier, who is is appointed by the programme operator. The results of the verification are presented transparently and clearly in a verification report.

For further information on a verification please contact us at DE.Ecobility.Experts@kiwa.com.

Product category rules (term, process)

Since some product groups differ greatly in their environmental performance, specific rules must be developed for the individual product groups, so-called „Produkt Kategorie Regeln" (PCR). Together with the General Program Guide, the PCRs form the basis for EPDs. The PCR process is organized by the program operator. The program operator is also responsible for ensuring that the PCRs set up comply with the requirements of ISO 14025. Before release, the program is checked by the independent expert committee. It is open to interested parties to participate in the development of PCR. Examples of group specific PCR's from Kiwa-EE can be found in the download area.

If you are interested in participating in the development of the PCR provided for public consultation, please contact us at DE.Ecobility.Experts@kiwa.com. Please enter your contact details and the name of the PCR in which you would like to participate.
