Powder-Foam Compatibility Testing
In the past, the low biodegradability of fluorosurfactants raised concerns among many people regarding the use of powder and foam extinguishing agents in fire extinguishers. As a result, increasing efforts were made to develop and market foam agents that do not contain fluorosurfactants.
Since these modern foam agents are now widely used, the question arises as to how compatible they are with existing powder and foam extinguishing agents. This compatibility is a key factor in effective fire suppression.
Our experts carry out the relevant tests for you and assess powder-foam compatibility using standardized test procedures. The testing method applied is based on Annex K of EN 615:2009.
How Does the Powder-Foam Compatibility Test Work?
To determine compatibility, we perform two comparative extinguishing tests:
- First, an extinguishing test is conducted using the respective foam agent.
- Subsequently, fire extinguishing powder is distributed over the fuel surface, ignited, and the interaction between the extinguishing agents is analyzed.
- Finally, the test results are evaluated.
If the extinguishing time increases by 25% or more, or the burn-back time decreases by 25% or more, the combination is considered incompatible, as the extinguishing performance of the foam is adversely affected.
If incompatibility is identified, we provide comprehensive advice on alternative solutions to ensure that your active fire protection continues to meet the highest standards.
