EPD and carbon footprint verification via Kiwa-Ecobility Experts

The publication of an EPD in life cycle assessment (LCA) and building material databases requires external verification of the environmental data. As a program operator for EPDs in accordance with the requirements of ISO 14025, Kiwa-Ecobility Experts (Kiwa-EE) supports companies, associations, and organizations in communicating quantifiable environmental information for products and services on a harmonized, scientific basis throughout Europe. Through external verification and subsequent publication of the EPD in recognized databases such as Ökobaudat (the EPD platform of the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community (BMI)), EPDs provide decision-makers in industry, governmental and non-governmental organizations, and end consumers with a data basis for comparing products and services in terms of their environmental impact. The verified and published climate and environmental indicators serve primarily as a credible marketing tool with reliable environmental statements for business-to-business (B2B) or business-to-consumer (B2C) communication.

The task of an EPD program operator is to verify and subsequently publish environmental product declarations (EPDs) in accordance with ISO 14025. Kiwa-Ecobility Experts (Kiwa-EE) does this in accordance with the General Program Instructions (GPI), which form the basis for the general program operation of Kiwa-EE and regulate the administrative and operational processes for the creation and publication of Type III EPDs.

Our standard service includes external verification of the EPD by an independent auditor, publication of the EPD on the Ecobility Experts homepage and on the ECO Platform, and, if desired, publication of the EPD on other platforms.

What is an EPD program operator?

An EPD program operator is an entity that operates a Type III environmental declaration program in accordance with ISO 14025. All tasks of the EPD program operator are defined in ISO 14025. Administration includes the following tasks, among others:

  • Definition and maintenance of general program instructions (GPI)
  • Creating transparency with regard to the stakeholders involved
  • Ensuring that the requirements for EPDs are met in accordance with the relevant standards and PCR
  • Ensuring data consistency
  • Providing public access to relevant EPD documents such as PCRs and General Program Instructions (GPI) and publishing EPDs
  • Ensuring a transparent and independent process for the creation and review of PCRs
  • Coordinating and ensuring an independent verification process

If necessary, Kiwa Ecobility Experts (Kiwa EE) will draw up the product category rules (PCR) for the product to be declared. The independent advisory board (SVA) and an expert committee (LCA Expert Group) are involved in drawing up and approving the PCR. The PCR is then published on the Kiwa EE website.

Based on the collected data and with the help of the PCR and other EPD and LCA standards, an LCA background report and a draft EPD are created. The documents are checked by an external verifier commissioned by Kiwa EE for completeness, consistency, and plausibility, as well as for compliance with the applicable standards and the PCR. The result of the check is documented in a verification report. The verification decision is positive if the EPD passes the formal and content review.

Once the EPD has been verified, it is published. It is always published in the Kiwa-EE EPD database and the ECO platform and can be uploaded to the owner's website. In addition, the EPD can also be uploaded to other platforms upon request.

After successful verification, the EPD is published via the Kiwa-EE EPD database.
