Development of gas-fired equipment

Kiwa is an experienced development partner for manufacturers of domestic, large kitchen and small industrial gas-fired appliances. Whether it concerns stove burners, catalytic hydrogen burners, steam convection ovens or hydrogen burners for industrial bakeries, Kiwa’s Combustion & Advanced Testing (CAT) team supports the complete process from idea to production-ready prototype.

Thanks to Kiwa’s in-depth expertise in gas applications, energy efficiency and safety, our CAT team optimizes existing designs and enables new applications that meet the highest standards for energy use, safety and cost efficiency. Retrofitting and adapting existing appliances for renewable gases such as hydrogen, biogas and DME is also one of our core competencies.

Why Kiwa?

The specialists in our CAT team, part of Kiwa Technology, have supported manufacturers for more than 20 years in developing and optimizing gas-fired installations and equipment. Kiwa offers:

  • A fully equipped gas laboratory where we can test and validate appliance performance on almost all flammable gases
  • In-house workshop facilities that allow us to build prototypes and implement technical changes quickly
  • Up-to-date knowledge of (inter)national and European regulations for gas-fired products and installations
  • Expertise in developing energy-efficient, safe and sustainable solutions for domestic appliances, large kitchen appliances and small industrial ovens

Our development process always focuses on low costs, maximum safety, optimal energy performance and sustainability. From concept to production-ready prototype we support the full trajectory.

Four-step development process

In a development project we typically follow four steps:

    Defining the scope

Together with the customer we define the scope of the project, taking relevant regulations, market developments and technological innovations into account. This allows us to identify opportunities to make the product more efficient, robust and cost-effective.

    Generating and selecting concepts

We develop multiple concepts that match the customer’s requirements. The most suitable concept is selected and developed into a functional model to demonstrate its operation.

Building and testing the functional model

The functional model is built by the customer, our workshop or a third party. Kiwa configures and tests the model in the gas laboratory, performs optimizations to develop a safe functional model, reliable and energy-efficient.

    Verification and market-ready product

The proven concept is integrated into the final product by the client. Kiwa performs final verification in the laboratory and, if desired, can conduct accelerated lifetime testing so the product can confidently be submitted for certification and market introduction.

Customer result

Upon completion the customer receives a proven reliable and efficient product, ready for certification and market introduction. This may include:

  • Efficiency improvement of an oven
  • Development of a flare system for (liquid) hydrogen
  • Adaptation of a gas appliance to updated regulations
  • Development of burners and heat exchangers for cooking kettles

We support both the improvement of existing designs and the development of cost-effective, sustainable alternatives.
