Private gas networks: insight into methane emissions and control of your gas infrastructure

Kiwa helps owners and operators of private gas networks comply with the new requirements for methane emissions and gain control over the safety, condition and future readiness of their gas infrastructure. With our knowledge of regulations, methane emissions reporting, LDAR and asset management, we are your independent one-stop-shop for professional gas network management.

The European Methane Regulation introduces new requirements for monitoring, reporting and reducing methane emissions. As a result, owners and operators of private gas networks and closed distribution systems are facing new obligations, including requirements related to methane emissions reporting and leak detection and repair (LDAR).

At the same time, having a clear understanding of the technical condition of your gas network is essential for safe and reliable management. Many private gas networks have been expanded or modified over the years. As a result, it is not always clear what the current condition of pipelines, valves and other components is, what risks are present and what investments will be needed in the long term.

Kiwa supports owners and operators of private gas networks with both issues. We help you with methane emissions reporting and support you in the professional management of your gas infrastructure. With independent technical expertise, knowledge of regulations and experience in asset management, you gain insight into your obligations, the condition of your gas network and the measures needed for safe and future-ready management.

Methane emissions reporting and support with the Methane Regulation

The European Methane Regulation requires greater insight into methane emissions from gas infrastructure. Collecting the right data, assessing emissions and preparing a well-supported report requires specialized knowledge. Kiwa supports you throughout the methane emissions reporting process. From collecting and validating data to preparing the report and responding to questions from the Dutch State Supervision of Mines (Staatstoezicht op de Mijnen, SodM).

Our support includes:

  • Collecting and validating data on methane emissions
  • Assessing and interpreting available emissions data
  • Preparing methane emissions reports
  • Supporting the substantiation and documentation of the report
  • Supporting questions and inspections by the Dutch State Supervision of Mines (SodM)
  • Advising on the practical application of the European Methane Regulation

Kiwa has extensive experience with methane emissions reporting for Dutch regional gas network operators. We are also active internationally within the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP), the international framework for reporting on methane emissions in the oil and gas sector.

LDAR: leak detection and repair

An important part of addressing methane emissions is detecting and repairing leaks. With an LDAR (Leak Detection and Repair) program, potential emission sources are systematically identified, assessed and, where necessary, repaired.

Kiwa can support you in setting up and implementing an appropriate approach to leak detection and repair. We look not only at individual leaks but also at how they relate to your management and maintenance processes. This gives you a better understanding of the emission sources within your gas infrastructure and enables you to take targeted measures to reduce methane emissions.

Asset management of your private gas network

In addition to the obligations related to methane emissions, it’s important to have a clear understanding of the technical condition of your gas network. Up-to-date insight into the condition of your infrastructure helps you manage risks, perform maintenance in a targeted way and plan investments more effectively. Kiwa assesses the technical condition of your private gas network and advises on management, maintenance and possible replacement.

Our approach can include:

  • Assessment of pipelines, installations and valves
  • Inspections and technical assessments
  • Risk analyses and risk assessments
  • Assessment of the integrity and safety of your gas network
  • Analysis of the remaining service life of components
  • Development of asset management and maintenance strategies
  • Preparation of inspection, maintenance and replacement plans
  • Advice on the future readiness of your gas infrastructure

Based on this, you gain a clear picture of the current condition of your gas network and the measures needed to manage it safely and reliably.

One integrated approach to your private gas network

Methane emissions, technical condition, safety and asset management are closely connected. That’s why Kiwa combines technical expertise with knowledge of regulations and practical experience with gas infrastructure. You can turn to us for methane emissions reporting and LDAR as well as technical assessments, risk analyses and asset management. This gives you insight not only into your obligations toward the Dutch mining supervisor SodM but also into the performance, risks and future readiness of your gas network.
