The test for Determination of Inflection Temperature under Load determines the temperature at which a rectangular specimen, resting on two supports placed at a specific distance and centrally stressed in bending, deforms to a given deflection value.
The indication obtained from the HDT test relates to the temperature at which a given material, when used at relatively high temperatures and mechanically stressed, can be assumed to deform and thus result in failure of the part from which it is made.
