Standards & Regulations We Work To

Standards & Regulations We Work To

Kiwa Watertec’s testing, inspection and certification services are aligned with the most recognised UK and international standards for sanitary and plumbing products. We help manufacturers, specifiers, and installers demonstrate compliance with legal, safety, and performance requirements — supporting market access and public health protection.

We work to the following key standards and frameworks:

  • Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999

The primary UK regulation governing the design, installation, and use of fittings connected to public water supplies.

  • Regulation 4 Certification (KUKreg4)

An ISO 17065 UKAS-accredited scheme that demonstrates compliance with Regulation 4 of the Water Fittings Regulations — a recognised alternative to WRAS approval.

  • BS 6920 — Suitability of non-metallic materials for use in contact with drinking water

Ensures materials do not adversely affect water quality, taste, odour, or appearance.

  • TMV Type 2 and TMV Type 3 Certification

Certification of thermostatic mixing valves for domestic and healthcare environments.

  • TMV Type 2 - BS EN 1111 / BS EN 1287

Standards for thermostatic mixing valves under high and low pressure conditions.

  • TMV Type 3 - DoH- HTM-04-01 Supplement D 08

Healthcare guidance requirements for TMV Type 3 applications under DoH- HTM-04-01 Supplement D 08.

  • EU Drinking Water Directive (DWD)

We support manufacturers aiming to meet the requirements of the DWD for placing products on the EU market.

  • Fit4DW Initiative

Fit4DW is a database created between Kiwa, DVGW and figawa to store certified information of materials and components, which can be used to support certification processes for agents, consultants, manufacturers and retailers, with the aim to speed up the certification process.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Attestation Levels 3 and 1+?

Attestation levels refer to the level of oversight required for demonstrating product conformity under UK and EU regulations.

Level 3 involves type testing by a third party such as Kiwa Watetec and our UKAS-accredited laboritories. There are no annual audits, so full re tests are required after 5 years.

Level 1+ is more rigorous and includes initial type testing, continuous surveillance and audits of factory production control by a notified or approved body.

Unlike many of our competitors, Kiwa Watertec can support both levels depending on the product and regulatory requirements.

What should I do if a specifier isn’t aware that KUKreg4 is a legitimate alternative to WRAS?

You can confidently inform them that KUKreg4 is a UKAS-accredited certification scheme that demonstrates compliance with Reg 4 of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999. It is recognised by water companies and regulators as a valid route to demonstrate compliance. We’re happy to provide supporting documentation or speak directly with specifiers to clarify.

What is Water Regulation 4?

Water Regulation 4 is part of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999, which governs the design, installation, and use of fittings that carry or receive water from the public supply. Regulation 4 requires that all fittings and materials used must not cause waste, misuse, undue consumption, or contamination of the water supply. Certification schemes like KUKreg4 help manufacturers demonstrate compliance with this regulation.

Do you offer support during the certification process?

Absolutely. Our team guides you step-by-step and provides ongoing support.

What Is Third-Party Certification?

Third-party certification means an independent body (like Watertec) verifies that specific requirements have been met. This impartial assurance is valued by clients, regulators, and insurers.

What Is Accreditation and Why Does It Matter?

Accreditation is formal recognition that a certification body is competent to carry out assessments. Watertec is accredited by UKAS, which ensures our certification practices meet national and international standards.
