How Large Hydrogen Storage Tanks Are Tested for Real-World Performance

Industrial hydrogen power facility with large H2 storage tanks, pipes, and metal framework.

Hydrogen storage systems must perform safely and reliably under demanding operating conditions. Comprehensive testing plays a key role in verifying their durability, performance and compliance before they enter the market.

To meet this demand, Kiwa ET has expanded its hydrogen testing infrastructure and can now perform standardized testing on hydrogen pressure tanks with volumes of up to 600 litres.

Recently, Kiwa ET GmbH successfully completed the testing of a Type IV hydrogen pressure tank with a volume of nearly 600 litres and a nominal working pressure of 70 MPa as part of a product certification program. The tank successfully passed the UN ECE R134 Phase 2 Verification Test for Expected On-Road Performance (Pneumatic Sequential Tests), demonstrating its ability to withstand demanding pressure cycling conditions representative of real-world operation.

This expanded capability was made possible through the installation of a new compressor unit. Previously, testing large-volume tanks according to applicable standards was often not possible due to equipment limitations. The upgraded facility now enables manufacturers to test and certify larger hydrogen storage systems in accordance with international requirements.
