Paulig relies on Kiwa’s expertise in safety
Food company Paulig’s Vuosaari roastery is one of Europe’s largest and most modern coffee roasteries. To ensure the roastery’s safety and the smooth running of day-to-day operations, Paulig has entered into an inspection cooperation agreement with Kiwa.
This also makes the work of Timo Tuukkanen, Head of Property and Safety, easier, as Kiwa monitors inspection intervals and notifies him when inspection dates are approaching. The agreement covers, amongst other things, inspections of lifts, electrically operated overhead doors, automatic fire alarm and suppression systems, lifting equipment, pressure equipment and measuring instruments.
According to Tuukkanen, Kiwa was chosen as the inspection partner because the company wanted to ensure that equipment and technology related to safety systems are always in proper working order for official inspections. “The involvement of the authorities imposes stricter requirements on operators, and Kiwa is a reliable partner in this regard. I can attend regulatory inspections with peace of mind, knowing that periodic inspections and the maintenance they require have been carried out on time,” says Tuukkanen.
The annual meeting adds value
The partnership includes an annual review meeting, at which the status of the previous year’s inspections is reviewed, including any shortcomings and the progress made in rectifying them. This annual meeting serves as an important starting point for the coffee roastery’s operations and planning: it helps to identify the needs for the coming year and to draw up the budget. “These have been truly productive and value-adding joint meetings, where we can ensure that we ourselves have fulfilled our own responsibilities, for example with regard to necessary repairs,” says Tuukkanen. The meetings also provide an opportunity to hear about any new tools and services Kiwa may offer, which Paulig could use to further develop its operations, sustainability and safety.
Clear responsibilities and smooth reporting support day-to-day operations
There is a great deal of equipment to be inspected at the roasting plant, and, in addition to Tuukkanen, it is managed by the quality department and maintenance. According to Tuukkanen, all parties have a clear understanding of who to contact for each specific matter. “Centralising the inspections with Kiwa brings us added value precisely because it makes dealing with matters easy and hassle-free.”
Tuukkanen believes that this seamless collaboration is also evident in the reporting. “Reports are delivered on time and are clear and consistent, so they are easy for all of us to read. Any shortcomings are also clearly documented, which makes it easier to plan follow-up measures,” Tuukkanen says.
Safety as the foundation of everything
According to Tuukkanen, safety is the foundation of all operations at Paulig, and no risks are taken when it comes to building safety either. “We cannot allow our invaluable staff to work in a high-risk environment. We utilise a wide range of security technology, and inspections and maintenance ensure that the equipment operates reliably and helps us cope even in crisis situations.”
Concluding, Tuukkanen warmly recommends Kiwa’s equipment inspection services to anyone who wants to make their work as reliable and straightforward as possible. “Under this partnership model, Kiwa takes care of the preparations and scheduling for the inspections, so all you need to do is follow the process. It saves a lot of time, effort and, above all, worry,” Tuukkanen sums up.
