November 19th, + November 26th, 2024 - The EU organic regulation (EU) 2018/848 will be in force from 1st January 2025 for operators located in Third Countries (TC). This new legal framework is applicable for all operators who want to market their or-ganic product in Europe. In January 2023, USDA published a new so-called Final Rule. It was a revision of the regulations of the National Organic Program (NOP). The focus is on the SOE (Strengthening Organic Enforcement). The SOE went into full effect March 19th, 2024. The USDA publishes the “New Final Rule” for the National Organic Program in the USA (kiwa.com), which requires all organic imports into the United States to be declared organic and accompanied by a NOP import certificate. This change will improve traceability and monitoring of organic imports into the United States, making fraud more difficult.

The emergence of longer and more complex supply chains has made the need for more verification tools and methods necessary. The Strengthening Organic Enforcement (SOE) Final Rule requires that operations label nonretail containers with critical information that will help to prevent commingling of organic and non-organic products and contact with prohibited substances while supporting traceability and verification. The rule also clarifies how to calculate the percentage of organic ingredients in multi-ingredient products.
