From compliance to competitive advantage: Kiwa helps manufacturers prepare for the digital battery passport
Powered by a digital platform built on Twintag technology for creating and managing battery passports.
2027 starts today
From 18 February 2027, every electric vehicle battery, light means of transport battery and industrial battery above 2kWh placed on the EU market must carry a digital battery passport under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, accessible through a QR code. With the deadline only months away, the question has moved on from what the Regulation requires to whether your data, systems and supply chain can deliver it.
Battery manufacturers and other economic operators that will need to provide battery passports from 2027 should act now. The first steps are to determine which products are in scope, identify where the required data sits and assess gaps against the Regulation and the new EN standards that support it. From there, they can set a realistic implementation plan. Kiwa can help you comply on time, from assessing your readiness to creating and managing your passports with a platform built on Twintag technology.
A passport is only as good as the data behind it
A battery passport brings together material composition, carbon footprint, recycled content, performance and durability and, later, state of health for second life. That data sits across suppliers, plants and systems, and it must stay accurate, secure and shareable for the battery's entire lifecycle.
The Regulation sets the obligation. The new EN 18xxx series from CEN/CENELEC JTC 24 now defines how a passport works, covering identifiers (EN 18219), data carriers (EN 18220), data exchange (EN 18216), storage (EN 18221), APIs (EN 18222) and interoperability (EN 18223). Building on these standards today saves costly rework later.
How Kiwa con help
Each service is available on its own, and Kiwa's assessments are always independent of its implementation work.
Independent assurance
Battery Passport solution
Proven at scale
More than 600,000 industrial assets across Europe already carry a unique digital identity on Kiwa's digital asset platform, built with Twintag and linked to inspection records, certificates and lifecycle information. The same principles of unique identity, trusted data and controlled access form the backbone of Kiwa's Battery Passport solution.
Recent work includes:
- A full Battery Passport solution for a European battery systems manufacturer, from data model to passport platform.
- An independent assessment of the in-house battery passport of a global smart energy technology company, resulting in a prioritized roadmap.
Compliance is the starting point. A digital battery passport creates a digital foundation that helps manufacturers increase transparency, strengthen trust and unlock value well beyond regulatory requirements.
Take the first step
Kiwa can begin with a readiness discussion or an independent technical gap assessment, or set you up directly on the Battery Passport solution and bring your passport to life. The deadline is fixed and the market is already moving, so now is the time to get your data ready.
