We are proud to share that within just a few months, Baring Farsund new land-based aquaculture facility became fully operational and successfully achieved GLOBALG.A.P. certification. This milestone reflects their dedication to responsible production, supported by the professionalism of our Kiwa audit team.

When Baring Farsund launched as a land-based aquaculture company in 2024, there was no doubt that GLOBALG.A.P. certification would be a key priority. For Maren Elise Nyberg, Quality, Environment and Sustainability Manager at Baring Farsund, it was important to build a solid corporate culture from day one - and to ensure that both customers and partners could trust the company.

GLOBALG.A.P. is a recognized industry standard, and for us it was a natural step to pursue this certification to demonstrate that we take quality and sustainability seriously. Many of our customers and partners are certified themselves, and this gives us a common language and a clear seal of quality.

From vision to reality: Baring Farsund is building the land-based facilities of the future

The construction of the new land-based facility begun in the summer of 2024 and production already started by May 2025. Within a few months, the necessary systems, procedures and technology had been implemented, and by September of that year, the GLOBALG.A.P. certification had been successfully obtained.

This provides customers with high-quality fish, and Baring Farsund already has permission to produce up to 24,000 tons. Throughout this process, the standard helped establish effective procedures for information flow, documentation, and non-conformance management.

“We were very keen to get the certification in place early, even though it wasn’t a mandatory requirement. It was a bit stressful to get everything done by September, but we were very motivated and proud to succeeded,” says Nyberg.

A strong culture and clear processes

The GLOBALG.A.P. certification has been of great significance to Baring Farsund, both internally and externally.
"One of the first things I did was frame the certificate and hang it up in the meeting room. The GLOBALG.A.P. certificate immediately gains recognition among visitors, customers, and partners. For us, it’s a seal of quality and a competitive advantage," says Nyberg.

The certification and clear processes have created a sense of security for employees and contributed to effective communication across the organization.
“The standard provides security for employees and ensures that everyone knows what is expected. We have established clear procedures for communication and handling inquiries, which made us more transparent and efficient,” she says.

Smart technology, Sustainable results

Baring Farsund choose Optiras and Searas as the core of its production, solutions that contribute to both efficient operations and a low environmental impact.
"Optiras supplied prefabricated tanks manufactured in Lervik, which provide us with low energy consumption and efficient water recirculation (RAS). The technology supplier aims to keep electricity consumption below 2 kWh per kilogram of fish produced. The Searas system gives us full control over oxygen, temperature, and lighting conditions, and we have been involved in developing the system so that it is tailored to our needs", explains Maren Elise Nyberg.

These technology choices contribute to a low environmental impact and good fish health, while also providing flexibility and a quick start-up.

A structured approach to certification success

In order to achieve certification, Baring Farsund required a system that could effectively manage complexity and pace. The decision was made to proceed with the Landax management system, a tool with which Nyberg was already familiar from previous projects.
"I had previously worked with Landax and was aware of its flexibility and ease of use. The system has been tailored to aquaculture and is fully integrated with both ISO standards and GLOBALG.A.P. It provides us with effective control over non-conformity management, checklists and documentation, while facilitating seamless collaboration with employees and partners", she says.

Nyberg explains that she feels the process – from the initial contact with Kiwa to final certification – has been characterised by professionalism and excellent follow-up.

We found Kiwa to be highly professional and clear, both during the bidding phase and throughout the audit. The auditor was knowledgeable and supportive, and served as a great sounding board. We received quick and precise answers to our questions, and we felt that Kiwa helped us achieve certification so quickly.

Looking ahead

With the certification in place, Baring Farsund continues its work on further improvement and development.
“We are considering further certification and exploring the possibility of producing food-grade fish in the long term. The goal is to build a strong corporate culture, ensure good fish health, and be an attractive partner for both customers and the local community,” concludes Nyberg.
