Damage analyses

If a distribution network is damaged, independent advice is needed in order to determine the cause. As a result, the costs of the damage can be recovered and similar faults can be avoided in the future.

An incidental case of damage may indicate that the heat energy distribution network is nearing the end of its service life in a number of locations. Once the cause of the damage has been identified, comparable parts of the network that have not yet failed can be investigated and analysed.

Kiwa’s materials testing and analyses experts can dispose of a state-of-the-art laboratory for chemical and physical analyses, mechanical tests and microscopic analyses. The results help to clarify whether more cases of damage can be expected in the future and indicate whether or not possible early replacement of parts of the network is justified.

In the initial instance, Kiwa will collect information on the case of damage. The next action is to draw up a step-by-step plan in order to analyse the specific case of damage in both desk and lab research.

Our services

Kiwa has a wide range of analysis in the case of damage. Check out what we have to offer below.

  • The resistance against permeation of gases and water through pipe walls and other separation components such as films, is for many practical applications a very important property. In this area, Kiwa Technology has gained vast knowledge and experience.

  • The quality of (city) heating networks depends to a significant extent on the quality of the connections in the pipelines. Leaks that allow water ingress, which often occur in sleeve connections, can lead to degradation of the insulation with all the resulting effects on thermal insulation performance

  • Problems in pipelines are often caused by the joints. Kiwa Technology has built up vast experience. For example, we have used our expertise in the area of plastic welding (of PE, PEX, PA, PP etc.) and other jointing techniques for years to support our consultancy regarding research and development projects.

  • Cathodic protection (CB) is the ideal method for guarding pipelines and storage tanks against corrosion. However, the application of CB requires specialist knowledge, especially in extraordinary situations or when repairing breakdowns.
    Show
  • Damage that occurs in a heat energy distribution network can soon lead to substantial costs. These costs are not only associated with repairing the network but also with indirect damage suffered by users who are unable to draw off the heat energy they require.
    Show
  • The added value of Risk Based Asset Management (e.g. according to PAS55 or NTA 8120) can be broken down into a number of internal and external benefits.
    Show
  • Innovative new products and services that can be used in the construction, maintenance, repair, replacement and management of gas distribution networks regularly appear on the market.
