Kiwa develops certification for IoT equipment

The number of devices connected to the internet is growing rapidly. Internet of Things (IoT) offers consumers and entrepreneurs many opportunities, but also entails risks. It is therefore important for producers of IoT devices to be able to put safe, certified equipment on the market. Kiwa has developed a special certification scheme for IoT devices with which products are assessed and certified according to international safety standards.

Dutch government measures to improve safety

To increase the safety level of IoT equipment, the Dutch government wants the Delft University of Technology to conduct research from now until 2021 into the safety of Internet of Things equipment, such as smart thermostats, refrigerators and security cameras. If a product is found to be unsafe, the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate, supporter of the research, will contact the manufacturer to improve it. With these measures, the Netherlands anticipates structural European and international rules.

Kiwa IoT equipment certification

Kiwa has already signaled an increase in manufacturers of ‘smart equipment’ who want their products to be assessed independently on specific IoT aspects. Therefore we have developed a special certification scheme for both IoT devices and the apps with which you can operate them. With this certification you can prove that an IoT device meets international safety standards.
