Historically countries have used different types of generation and storage assets to manage our electricity networks, including pumped hydro storage capable of quickly providing hundreds of megawatts of electricity for several hours when needed.

About the Fossil-free Steel Project 

SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall joined forces to create HYBRIT – a joint venture project that endeavours to revolutionize steel making. HYBRIT aims to replace coking coal, traditionally needed for ore-based steel making, with hydrogen. The result will be unique: the world’s first fossil-free steel-making technology, with virtually no carbon footprint. The goal is to have a solution for fossil-free steel by 2026.

Why is the H100 project happening?
Recent studies have concluded that supplying hydrogen to homes in place of natural gas may offer a cost-effective route to decarbonising heat. However the risks of using hydrogen in homes is not well understood.

The HG2V (Hydrogen Grid to Vehicle) project was commissioned by Cadent Gas, and was a collaboration between Kiwa Gastec, DNV GL, NPL and Imperial College London, to determine whether the existing gas network could be re-purposed to supply hydrogen for use in fuel cell electric vehicles.

Hy4Heat is a study to establish if it’s technically possible and safe to replace natural gas with hydrogen in residential and commercial buildings and gas appliances. This will enable the government to determine whether to proceed to a community trial.

A project to understand whether it is possible for standard heating and cooking appliances (designed for natural gas) to operate normally with a blend of natural gas and up to 20% hydrogen.

Hydrogen’s potential is far reaching – from fuelling the transport system to providing energy for domestic heating and cooking. Given that over 30% of carbon emissions in the UK derive from cooking and providing heat in the home, the benefit from switching to hydrogen would go a long way to meeting the decarbonisation target.

Kiwa Gastec collaborated with E4tech in this DECC-sponsored desk study on the development of a hydrogen-fired appliance supply chain.

There is a strong movement to convert the UK’s existing natural gas grid to hydrogen, driven by ambitious carbon reduction targets. Widespread conversion from natural gas to hydrogen would make a huge contribution to achieving Britain’s emissions target of an 80 per cent cut in emissions (on 1990 levels) by 2050. Assessing the modifications required to domestic properties to receive a change in gas supply is a vital part of understanding the resources required to decarbonise the UK’s domestic heating and cooking energy supply.

The Hydrogen Hubs project is a Cadent Foundation-sponsored feasibility study investigating if large scale local energy production (Hubs) can provide zero carbon hydrogen to decarbonise challenging energy sectors. Focussed primarily on heat and transport the project will investigate practical and commercial viability of such a project for the city of Birmingham. Tyseley Energy Park has been identified as the location for the feasibility study as production here could be distributed to key demands in the city. The project is a collaboration between Kiwa Gastec, Cadent Gas, the University of Birmingham, and Tyseley Energy Park.

Decarbonising the heat sector is a priority to help the UK meet its commitment to Net Zero. Assessing the feasibility for a ‘green’ hydrogen production plant, storage and distribution infrastructure to deliver energy for heating and cooking to some 300-900 homes in Levenmouth is a test case which, should it prove successful, will shape future energy strategy for the UK.

Kiwa Moroni has been engaged by Octopus Renewables to execute vendor technical advisory service aimed to issue a detailed vendor technical due diligence to be shared with the potential buyers of the 173 MW portfolio, consisting of 17 photovoltaic plants located in Italy: Nine plants are located in Lazio, and eight are located in Sardinia.
